Upper School

Our classical curriculum provides students with a robust education that challenges and encourages them to excel both in learning and in character

Rigorous Academics

NCA’s classical education is language-focused, based on words (written or spoken), an inherently more rigorous mode of learning which requires very different habits of thought than image-based learning. We prepare students to succeed and to assume their roles as virtuous, productive American citizens.

Singapore Math

The Singapore Math curriculum is the U.S. edition of the English equivalent to the national mathematics curriculum used throughout the country of Singapore, and international math scores show very high student outcomes as a result of using this resource. Singapore is the world leader in mathematics achievement, according to at least two major longitudinal studies.

6-8th Grade Curriculum

Core

Scholars will take literature, grammar, composition, civics (seventh grade), history and geography, science, Singapore Mathematics (6A-6B in sixth grade) and Pre-Algebra (seventh and eighth grade). Algebra 1 will be taken in eighth grade for scholars who are prepared to take their first high school level math course.

Electives

Music, art, and Latin will be included each year as electives. Latin 1 will be taken in eighth grade by scholars who have been at NCA for more than one school year, or show previous Latin experience, who are prepared to take their first high school level language course. Scholars who qualify for intensive academic remediation will be placed into the appropriate course in place of one of the electives.

9-12th Grade Curriculum Highlights

NCA’s high school curriculum follows the Barney Charter School Initiative course sequence:

  • Four and a half years of history
  • Four years of literature, math, and science
  • Three years of foreign language
  • One year of composition
  • A semester each of government, economics, moral philosophy, music, and art

High school students will receive a content-rich classical liberal arts education that will align with and exceed Florida State Standards. Teachers will be equipped to train upper level students in Socratic Seminars to encourage intelligent, logical, and independent thinking.

Preparing Students for College & Beyond

At NCA, high academic achievement, personal discipline, ethics, and responsibility will be consistently reinforced through the study of subjects in the classical tradition. While employability is an admirable and essential end of education, we find the full purpose of education to be much broader. Students will graduate from NCA highly literate and ethical citizens who are informed, discerning, responsible, and virtuous. They are well-prepared to succeed in college and career, to advance into any life endeavor, and to lead and inspire others.

School Profile for College Applications

Each year, the College Advisor completes a profile that is sent to each college/university that a senior is applying to for admission. The information contained is about the set up of the school, the curriculum the scholars may cover, and any other special points that the school wishes to highlight.
